Some wild birds accidentally spilled bird feeds on my backyard on feeding. Later, I discovered wheat was growing on my backyard. I was quite excited to see how wheat looks like although I eat bread daily. This spring, I sowed wheat on seeds sorted out from bird feed.
I observed the stalk (stem) of wheat is made up of layers of cylinders. Each layer will split at the end to become a leaf. On mature, hairs will show at the center of innermost tube, then, seed heads will spit out. The innermost tube will also become a leaf, which protects the kernels. The weight of kernels will make the head bends like a bow. The stalks of the wheat plants are long and slender. They can be easily broken by hail, blown over by strong winds, or pushed down by hard rain. If the stalk is damaged while it is still providing nutrients to the developing seeds, the wheat seeds may not develop correctly or the plant may not produce as many seeds as it should. If the stalk is damaged near the end of the growing process, the seeds may fall out of the head of the wheat plant (called shattering) and fall to the ground where they cannot be harvested.
By July, my wheat was already well grown. I noticed the seed heads were full of kernels. Each kernel has a piece of hair at the tip. Wild birds came to pick the kernels. Some kernels were hollow because the stalk had been damaged by birds during development. Some kernel looks rich and healthy. Some shattered on the earth. I picked some kernels and squeezed on them, there were paste like white substance came out. This juicy substance called endosperm is the main ingredient of flour on dried up. The endosperm is the largest part of the kernel and takes up 83% of the kernels mass. This is the area where the starch is stored. The endosperm contains carbohydrates, protein, iron, and B-complex vitamins.
I remember Matthew 12:1, said At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the sabbath; his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. So I tasted the kernel as the disciples did. The juicy kernel has a little fishy taste, like raw broccoli. The bran (crust) is a bite rough to eat. Bran is the outer coat of the kernel and, is a very good source of fibre. It comprises about 14.5% of the kernels mass. It contains protein, B-complex vitamins, and indigestible cellulose material also called dietary fibre. It is included in whole-wheat flour. Using total wheat to make bread is called whole wheat bread. Whole grains, in particular, help reduce the risk of many major diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, many chronic diseases such as diabetes and cancer, and provide energy for daily activities and long-term wellness. Fiber in bran can smooth digestion. White flour has the bran removed and bleached is not as nutrition as whole wheat. White flour bread is softer, but you have to eat more to fill your hunger. Whole wheat bread is more economy although its price is higher. Bran could be found on breakfast cereals. The wheat germ is the sprouting section of the wheat kernel. It makes up about 2.5% of the total kernel mass. The germ also contains a great deal of B-complex vitamins and trace minerals.
I counted the number of grains per strand is approximately 28. I thought each seed can yield twenty eight times is too little. On further examination, I discovered there were many strands coming out from the same root. I counted the number of strands was 28. On multiplying these two numbers, I got a number of 784. I was quite satisfied with this yield per seed.
But I still do not understand John 12:24, said: Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. When I sow seeds, which were dried and frozen, my wife said it wouldnt grow. She thought seed must have life to grow. I explained to her wheat can pass through the winter in the field. I also said Jesus has said the seed must die to grow. I looked up on the Internet to understand more about wheat. On the web site of wheatmania.com said: As the wheat plants mature, they will produce a seed head one head of wheat per stalk. Once the seeds in the head of wheat have been pollinated and have matured, the wheat plant itself will begin to die. The wheat seeds, also called kernels, will be harvested when they have dried and developed a hardened outer shell.
So Jesus was correct. A wheat seed must dry up and die before it grows. I observed this is generally true to other type of seeds too. Dried seeds can put into storage for a long time. A living seed put on storage will fungus. On contacting with water, seeds will germinate and grow. Each seed can bear many times of fruit.
Jesus said these words when it was about the time to die for us. If Jesus died, He will be awaked and uses His life to redeem us from sin. Die is the solution to get life again. Our next life will be eternal life. That is why Christians do not afraid of death. Jesus continued said: He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. John 12:25. For those who are selfishly keep his life would eventually lost his life. Just like the hollowed seeds, which will never bear fruit. For those poor, sick, and people who hate to continue living in this world, Jesus said with compassion, that they should be looking forward to eternal life, for there wont be sorrow in heaven. Our suffering in this earth is only temporary.
Jesus said: Truly, I say to you, there is no man who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not receive manifold more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life. Luke 18:29-30. We who are saved by Jesus blood should gospel the world with our best effort to bring as many people to be saved as well. Jesus assured we would be rewarded both on earth and in heaven. Those who selfishly keep the gospel will lose his life.
Jesus had said some parables on wheat. Matthew 13:1-30 said:
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat there; and the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: "A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they had not much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched; and since they had no root they withered away. Other seeds fell upon thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear." Then the disciples came and said to him, "Why do you speak to them in parables?" And he answered them, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For to him who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah which says: 'You shall indeed hear but never understand, and you shall indeed see but never perceive. For this people's heart has grown dull, and their ears are heavy of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should perceive with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn for me to heal them.' But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. Truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. "Hear then the parable of the sower. When any one hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in his heart; this is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is he who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the delight in riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. As for what was sown on good soil, this is he who hears the word and understands it; he indeed bears fruit, and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty." Another parable he put before them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field; but while men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. And the servants of the householder came and said to him, 'Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then has it weeds?' He said to them, 'An enemy has done this.' The servants said to him, 'Then do you want us to go and gather them?' But he said, 'No; lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them.
Let both grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.'"
